Normandy Camporee
April 19-21, 2024
The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in France is located in Colleville-sur-Mer, and was established by the U.S. First Army on June 8, 1944 as the first American cemetery on European soil in World War II. The cemetery site covers 172.5 acres and contains the graves of 9,387 of our military dead, most of whom lost their lives in the D-Day landings and ensuing operations. On the Walls of the Missing, in a semicircular garden on the east side of the memorial, are inscribed 1,557 names. Rosettes mark the names of those since recovered and identified.
The cemetery is open to the public all year round, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Sunday, April 21st, the Cemetery will be the place where we have our ceremony to honour those who gave the ultimate sacrifice during WW II. From the campsite Omaha Beach we hope to be able to organize a walk to the cemetery for all Scouts participation in this event. Entering from the seaside we will line up in front of the semi-circular monument, on each side of the reflecting pool. We will have guest speakers as part of the ceremony to address the gathered Scouts and lay wreaths. After the ceremony, there will be a flower available for each Scout to lay at an individual grave of their choosing.
