Ireland Jamboree 2008
Scouts from the BSA are welcome to join the scouts from Ireland for their 2008 Jamboree August 2-10.  You can find out more about the event at http://www.jamboree2008.ie/about/faqs/general.html
They have also put out a newsletter regarding the event which is very informative.  It is a large file but well worth it after the download (1.9 MB).

2008 Peacelight

What is the Peacelight?
In the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem there is an oil lamp that has been burning continuously for centuries. This is the PeaceLight flame. All the Christian nations in the world take turns contributing oil for this lamp.  The Peacelight of Bethlehem movement started in Austria as a Christmas collection for the poor called the “Lichts in Dunkel” or “light in the dark” sponsored by ORF, the Austrian radio and Television Corporation. In 1986, to thank the Austrians for their generous donations to the poor, and in the spirit of the Christmas season, ORF in collaboration with Austrian Airlines, organized a trip to the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem to light the first PeaceLight lantern from the eternal flame burning in the Church Grotto. The flame returned by plane to Austria and was then distributed throughout the country by the Austrian Railways with the help of the Austrian Scouts, who put into practice the Scouting motto, do a good turn daily.

Scout Involvement for the Peacelight of Bethlehem
This year Scouting is over 100 years old. To celebrate, we would like to distribute a special gift of Peace, the Peacelight flame and symbol, as a special birthday present from the Scouts to the American communities in the Transatlantic Council

We invite you to join in receiving the flame and become bearers of the “light”. Spread it first of all to your brothers and sisters in Scouting.

Members of your Scout Troop or Pack will travel to the nearest train station or distribution point to collect the light the week of December 14th 2008. Once they have the flame, they will then travel back to their local communities to present the light for all to share. There is no set agenda on how to distribute the flame.
