Friends of Scouting 2008
Transatlantic Council like every council in the Boy Scouts of America must be financially self-sufficient and self-sustaining in order to continue to operate. No BSA council is funded through the National Office.

We appreciate the support provided and need the support provided through the "Fair Share" contributions. This gives us income we can count on. These funds are used to help maintain our adminstrative team, and professional team.

A supplement to this support is the Friends of Scouting campaign. Friends of Scouting is where voluntary contributions are made to support the local council. We do realize that most places in Horizon do sustain themselves and have never "pushed" the campaign among our units. We do realize as well that several families have a soft spot for Scouting and also for Transatlantic Council and would provide a supplementary gift if asked.

We would like each unit to decide on how it would like to proceed for our 2008 campaign. Here are the options:
A) A letter is sent from Vince Cozzone outlining what is Friends of Scouting, and requesting a donation
B) Friends of Scouting cards and a sample script are sent to a volunteer who would make a personal presentation in the unit at a Blue and Gold banquet or troop court of honor.

Our goal is to raise $7,500 to support Scouting in Horizon and Transatlantic Council. Thank you for your support!

If you have items of interest for the rest of Horizon District please email them to the TAC Webmaster.

Do not be confused, you have not been swapped from Horizon District to Mayflower District without being told.
Mayflower District would like to invite you and your scouts to attend one or more of our camporees during the 2008/09 program year.  We are aware it is difficult when your district is spread over a large geographic area to find a location which all your units can attend.  Therefore we open up our camporees to offer an alternative for your unit.  The most important thing to us is that every scout has the opportunity to attend high quality camporees.
We have several great events lined up already:
Fall Camporee (for Boy Scouts, Venture Crews and Webelos II)
Dates: 3 to 5 October 2008
Place: Chalfont Heights Scout Camp, near London Heathrow Airport
Theme: Case of the Missing Camporee

Cub Adventure Weekend (for Cub Scouts)

The Information Packet is coming soon.
Spring Camporee (for Boy Scouts and Venture Crews)
Dates: 15 to 17 May 2009
Place: Longridge Scout Camp, near London Heathrow Airport
Theme: Curse of the Kon Tiki
The Information Packet is coming soon.

Centennial Quality Unit Awards

The Boy Scouts of America leading up to our 100th year celebration in 2010, has revamped the Quality Award Program. With the new system units set their own goals based on where they are at today in February and then see how they did come October with the presentation in November and December. If at your next committee meeting (or committee chair/unit leader meeting) you could set your goals and get the information back to me either via e-mail or faxing to my attention at the TAC office (0049 621 487 4002 or DSN 375-4002 for those with that capability) it would be appreciated. For training in particular, you can only do what is offered, so if we are not able to visit your community to train, then all we can reasonably expect is Youth Protection and Fast Start training both of which are offered on-line.

Training

We are willing to try to offer training as we know that the personal contact does make a difference. I certainly know that the quick visit and training in Incirlik in November, helped me to understand their challenges a bit better and helped to build contact. We will be scheduling training in the fall in Geneva and are working on providing training in Bucharest in March. Let me know if you are interested in a team coming to your area.

BSA does offer several self study courses to help leaders get started including the Fast Start Training, Youth Protection, and Troop Committee Challenge. These courses are excellent and become part of your training record. To link please visit the Training area of the TAC website and link on self study.
