WHAT IS GOLDEN FALCON?

The National Youth Leader Training NYLT is a six day outdoor experience for boy leaders in support of the Scoutmaster's responsibility of the training of the troop youth leadership. National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting, action-packed program designed to provide youth members of the Boys Scouts of America with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others. It is known in Transatlantic Council as "Golden Falcon".

WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE?

Scouting recognizes that Scoutmasters have the responsibility of training their own youth leaders. The purpose of Golden Falcon is not to assume that role, but to support it.

A Golden Falcon course is set up to represent a month in the life of a typical Scout troop, including mirroring the troop structure by assigning incoming participants to patrols. Participants use the full range of BSA resources for planning and conducting meetings that are interesting, lively, and relevant - a skill they can incorporate with great effectiveness when they return to their home troops. Along the way they also enjoy the Scouting fellowship and fun that are key components of the patrol method.

Golden Falcon participants discover that leading themselves and leading others requires a vision - a picture of future success. A constant refrain of NYLT is "If you can see it, you can be it."  Golden Falcon participants are given presentations that will give them a toolbox of effective leadership skills they can make their own.  Each participant will prepare his own vision, his own picture of future success. Our purpose is nothing less than changing the future for the better by preparing forward thinking, dynamic leaders of today and the future.

WHO MAY ATTEND?

Each Golden Falcon participant must be a First Class Scout, 13 years of age or older and currently filling a leadership position in the troop as senior patrol leader or assistant senior patrol leader, or likely to assume one of these positions in the immediate future. No age or rank waivers will be granted. Registration is first come first served until the maximum 48 Scouts are met. (There are no troop quotas however please read above as the Scout must be 13 when the course begins and must be a minimum of a First Class Scout). This is a BSA policy decision and may not be waived by anyone in Transatlantic Council.

IS THE HOME SCOUTMASTER INVOLVED?

Golden Falcon is intended to strengthen the relationship between the youth leader and his Scoutmaster.  Scoutmasters are welcome and encouraged to attend the closing ceremony on Friday night of the course. Parents are also encouraged to attend this special and meaningful event in the life of their boy.

WHAT'S THE DATE?

Golden Falcon will run from 5 August to 10 August (after 7 p.m.). Participants should plan to arrive between 0800 and 0930 hours on 5 August. Scouts will be ready to depart at 7 p.m. on the final day after the closing assembly. Scouts may spend the night and be picked up on the morning of 6 August if prior arrangements have been made with the course adult staff. All participants must depart Camp Freedom by 1000 am on 11 August,  unless you are supporting the OA work weekend.

WHAT'S THE LOCATION? To be updated!!

Golden Falcon will be held in Sembach, Germany. A map to the site is available upon request or on the website. Participants can arrive by airplane to Frankfurt International Airport, and will be met by a Golden Falcon staff member. This must be coordinated in advance. If Participants are traveling by train, they must arrive at the xxxxx Train Station no later than 0900 hours to be met by a Golden Falcon staff member. All participants traveling via train or plane must notify the Scoutmaster two weeks before course is to begin with their arrival and departure information. Please ensure this happens as it is very difficult to accommodate these travel plans and the youth may miss their train or plane.

WHAT'S THE COST? The cost for Golden Falcon is $250.00.  If you pay in full for the course before 31 May,  this fee is reduced to $225.00

This includes all food, camping equipment; course t-shirt, and all training materials. Scouts may wish to bring a small amount of spending money for the trading post.  Any participant who pays their fees in full before 31 May will receive a Scout Shop Order Form allowing for a one time discount on their uniform and literature orders prior to Golden Falcon. If paid in full after 31 May they will NOT receive the discount.

IS ANY SPECIAL EQUIPMENT NEEDED?

Most Scouts participating in an active unit outdoor program should have the necessary equipment. All participants must be dressed in a BSA Uniform Shirt, with badges and insignia properly placed, BSA Uniform Trousers or shorts, BSA socks and belt, neckerchief, slide and hat. Scouts should pack all of their gear in a backpack and also bring a small back packing type tent for an "outpost" camp.
