40th Bastogne Memorial Historic Hike
December 16 @ 08:00 - 17:00€6
This is not a BSA event. However, Historic Trail patch for Bastogne is offered by TAC.
The march of the perimeter was born in 1977, Maurice Sperandieu, attached to the 3rd Army of General Patton, within the 512th Military Police Battalion in 1944, begins to walk with friends to keep fit.
Veterans of the Second World War joined him to walk informally in the defensive perimeter of Bastogne, in order to honor the memory of their fellow soldiers.
Each year, in December, they find themselves in Bastogne, the number of participants has increased from a few tens to a few thousand over time (nearly 4,000 walkers).
In 2010, at the age of 84, Mr. Sperandieu passed his hand to the City of Bastogne and the American Base of Chièvres (USAG Benelux) to organize the march of the perimeter in the same spirit of memory.
The participation in the walk is 6 euros per person, all the profits will be paid to the American veterans via the association Honor Flight.
Honor Flight is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America’s Veterans for all their sacrifices. They transport veterans who no longer have the opportunity to make the trip to Europe to Washington, DC to visit and collect at the various monuments of the city.
Priority is given to older veterans, the survivors of the Second World War, because they are very important heroes in the United States. Across America, more than 640 World War II veterans die every day.
The “Perimeter March” donations allow Honor Flight to organize this memory trip to Washington for about thirty veterans every year.
This year the 40th Perimeter March will go through the defensive sector of Hemroulle.
