Who may participate?

 

Bowlers may attend as INDIVIDUALS, or as DENS, PATROLS, CREWS, PACKS, TROOPS,  It is suggested that TIGER CUBS bowl with an adult partner, each bowling alternate frames.

What is it?

 The Bowl-A-Thon is a fun way to help raise money for your unit and at the same time help support Scouting programs throughout the Transatlantic Council.

 

What happens if we cannot or do not want to bowl? Is there anything else we can do?

 We know is some communities that you may not be able to find a bowling center. Also other units have found that they would prefer to raise money in some other type of activity. You can certainly raise money by doing a "hike-a-thon," or a trash clean-up. Just let us know what type of activity that you are planning on doing.

What can I do?

First, your unit plans to take part by agreeing to bowl at the bowling center in your community. Please reserve your date and time in advance. Walk-ins at the bowling center may have to wait for an unscheduled lane. They will not be placed ahead of those waiting with reservations.

Generally only five bowlers can bowl on a lane at one time. However, adults and older Scouts who bowl faster may be able to have more on a lane. The idea is to have your group all finish at about the same time.

Cost of Bowling

The cost for three (3) games and shoes is paid out of Bowl-A-Thon proceeds for each bowler who qualifies. Each bowler has a chance to earn free bowling. (See awards program). Other bowlers must pay their own way

How do we raise money?

1.All bowlers should ask their families, friends and neighbors to sponsor their total score for three games. A minimum of 5 cents per pin bowled is the recommended pledge but any amount is acceptable. Pledges per pin times score equals the amount to be collected. As an example: If a bowler bowls a total of 250 pins and a sponsor has pledged 5 cents per pin, a total of $12.50 would be collected from the sponsor.

2.The more sponsors a bowler has the more money they can raise for Scouting. If your Scouts are given a donation, please record it in the flat donation column and the "Total Due" column and leave the "Pledge per Pin" block blank. Scouts should request pledges rather than donations.

3.Enclosed is a sponsor sign-up sheet, which should be used in recording sponsors. Each Scout must bring this sheet with them when they bowl so the score can be recorded and they can collect their pledges. Extra sponsor sheets are available from your District Executive and at the Council Service Center.

4.After your unit bowls, each Scout should go back to his sponsors and collect their pledges. When all pledges have been received, the unit leader should complete Column Seven (7), "Total Dollars Collected", of the "Control/Prize Order Sheet" and forward it to the Council Service Center with the payment. The unit retains their share.

 

How can unit leaders help?

1.See that your Scouts are at the bowling center and ready to bowl on time and that they conduct themselves as Scouts at all times while at the Bowling Center.

2.Each Unit Leader will need help with the score keeping. Bring someone else along. Designate a Unit Bowl-A-Thon Coordinator and bring a calculator.

3.All bowling reservations are on a first come, first served basis, so reserve your spot early.

4.In the event bowling centers run short of smaller size shoes, it is suggested that Tigers and Cub Scouts bring (not wear) sneakers with them. However, it is up to the Bowling Center to determine what can be worn on their lanes.

What prizes can be earned?

The "Top District Fund-raiser*" and "Top District Sponsor-collector" prizes are being offered in each District as well as prizes for individual bowlers. There will also be a prize for the Top Council Fund-raiser. It is hoped that as the bowlers strive to earn larger prizes, the commissions for all units will increase substantially.

* The Top District Fund-Raiser needs to be a minimum of $350 raised

Prizes are awarded only after all monies are tuned into the Council.

Cub Scouts may also qualify for the Bowling Belt Loop, which would be provided by their pack.

You can earn the council level prizes in the Bowl-A-Thon that are listed on the following sheets. The more money you raise for Scouting, the bigger your prize can be. All participants who secure a minimum of five sponsors will receive a Bowl-A-Thon Segment. Prizes are not cumulative, however, a participant may wish to receive prizes for categories that add up to their total sponsors. One prize can be selected from each level.

Commissions

Each unit will earn 40% of the net money collected if they turn the money in within four (4) weeks of their bowling. After that date, you would only be entitled to 35% of the money collected. Please turn in the "Control/Prize Order Sheet" and your payment to the Council Service Center.

The council commission is 40% plus 20% for prizes and administrative fees

What to do at the Bowling Center

1.Have your Unit Bowl-A-Thon Coordinator at the Bowling Center when the Scouts arrive.

2.Sign up all boys on your "Control/Prize Order Sheet" and collect all sponsor sheets to give to your unit scorekeepers.

3.When your unit is finished bowling, please write all bowling scores on the Bowl-A-Thon Pledge Sheet. Please have bowlers and families wait for their Bowl-A-Thon Pledge Sheet to be returned.

4.Mark which prize each bowler has selected from the appropriate level.

5.Bowlers without sponsors are limited to the number of lanes available after all bowlers with sponsors have been assigned. Please do not encourage bowlers without sponsors to attend as the space is severely limited at most centers.

6.It is the responsibility of the person in charge of the unit to collect any bowling fees owed for the bowlers who have not met the requirements and to turn the total amount in to the unit treasurer.

7.The unit treasurer pays for the bowling out of the unit funds and then is reimbursed when scouts collect their pledges.

8.You should bring a calculator with you for computing money to be collected.
