Course Director Conferences Completed

Almost 2,000 Scouters participated in the 18 Course Director Conferences offered across the country for Wood Badge, NYLT, and Powder Horn. Thanks are extended to the people who served as staff members to make these courses successful. This sets the stage for a highly successful training year in 2011. Conferences for this fall are in planning stages, registration information will be available by June.

Important Youth Protection Training Information

To help ensure that volunteers receive credit for Youth Protection training, we recommend taking the training online through myscouting.org. Setting up a MyScouting user account is easy. If you are a registered leader renewing your training, be sure that your MyScouting profile has your BSA member ID recorded so you receive proper credit. If you are new to Scouting, print a copy of the completion certificate at the end of the training and attach it to your Adult Leader Application in order to complete the process. Be sure to record your MyScouting user name and password in a safe place; you will want to return to your account when you receive your membership ID (found on your membership card) and update your MyScouting profile with your ID number so you can receive proper credit for all future online training.

If you take Youth Protection training in a classroom setting, be sure to get a completion certificate and ensure your name is properly recorded on the official class/ training roster. It’s a good idea to secure the name and e-mail of your trainer in case you lose your certificate.

On another note, a temporary allowance has been granted to permit Venturing direct-contact leaders to reregister if they have completed either general YPT (Y01) or Venturing YPT (Y02). It is anticipated this grace period will expire no later than June 1, 2011.

Did you know…? Hazardous Weather training is required for a tour permit on any outing—and one person must be Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) trained if a Cub Scout pack is conducting an outdoor activity or pack overnighter. A BALOO-trained leader must be listed on the tour permit. Hazardous Weather training must be renewed every two years.

Leadership Development Training News

The Leadership Development Task Force, in conjunction with the Volunteer Development Team at the national office in Irving, is working on a new syllabus for Powder Horn. This new syllabus will be available by download at www.scoutstuff.org in the first quarter of 2011. Watch for more on this good news in future issues.

The Kodiak syllabus is in final revision and will be ready post to scouting.org during the first quarter. If you have current Kodiak’s scheduled, you may continue to use the current syllabus until the new one is posted. There is no need to wait on the new syllabus.

Goodbye Texas, Hello West “By-God” Virginia! Did you hear the news? Our own Christopher (you know him as Chris) Smith is off to Jamboree-land at the Bechtel Summit in West Virginia. Although we hate to see him leave us, he returns to his beloved West Virginia… and a short commute (by car and not plane) to see his lovely girls, Sydney and Samantha. Kidding aside… Chris Smith has been promoted to the position of Team Leader of Operations for the Jamboree. He will be leaving the Volunteer Development Team on April 13th and will begin his new job on April 15th. Chris served the Volunteer Development team valiantly for 3 years.

Master Trainer Certification Delivering dynamic and relevant program means raising the bar for youth and adult training! We want to deliver training opportunities that will intrigue, excite, and invigorate both youth and adults. The Master Trainer Certification course will be offered for the first time next summer at Philmont Training Center during week one (June 5–11) and during the Fall Conference (Sept. 18–24). It is an opportunity to become a Certified Master Trainer for the BSA.


Mark Griffin
Team Leader, Volunteer Development

In an effort for you to get to know the new Team Leader for Volunteer Development, Mark Griffin’s bio is given below:From 2000 to February of 2011, Mark Griffin was the Scout Executive of the Blue Mountain Council of the Boy Scouts of America, serving 12 counties and over 7,500 youth and adults in Northeastern Oregon and Southeastern Washington with Scouting and Learning for Life programs.

Immediately prior to that assignment, Mark was the director of the BSA’s national volunteer training center - the Philmont Training Center at the Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico.

From 1992 to 1995 he served at the National Office of the BSA in Texas as the associate director of Cub Scouting.

Mark began his professional Scouting career in 1979 in Pensacola, Florida. In 1982 he joined the staff of the Gulf Ridge Council in Tampa, Florida and served in several positions during his tenure, the last being director of field service.

Mark has been involved in the Scouting program since joining as a Cub Scout in Agana, Guam in 1965. He is an Eagle Scout, the son of an Eagle Scout, and he and Janet – an active volunteer who has earned the Silver Beaver Award for her service to Scouting - are the parents of three Eagle Scouts.

Mark is the son of a Navy aviator and was born in Kingsville, Texas. He is a graduate of the University of West Florida with a B.A. degree in History-Public Service. He also attended Western Washington State College and the University of Southern Mississippi. For 15 years he served as a guest instructor in the Recreation Management and Youth Leadership department at Brigham Young University in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The Philmont Scout Ranch and training are a passion of Mark’s. In addition to his tenure as director of PTC, he has served on the faculty for conferences there nine times, and hiked the trails of Philmont five times. In 2010 he was elected to serve as a member of the board of directors for the Philmont Staff Association. In 2009 his book The Other Side of the Road, the story of PTC, was published by the staff association.

He is an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church and a member of the personnel, capital, and technology committees of Kennewick First Presbyterian. He is a past president of the Brooksville, Florida Rotary Club, the Cimarron, New Mexico Kiwanis Club, and the Columbia Center Rotary in Kennewick, Washington. He is a graduate of, and instructor for, the Rotary International Leadership Institute, and is the membership chair for Rotary District 5080.

Mark has been a volunteer for the Mid-Columbia Reading Foundation, the Family Fishing Pond, the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Council, and the Tri-Cities Regional Chamber of Commerce. For 11 campaigns he served as Human Services Division chair of the campaign cabinet of the United Way of Benton and Franklin Counties and was a member of the Cornerstone committee. He was a member of the Benton and Franklin Counties Community Solutions Team and the chair of the new “Prepared by 20” initiative.
