2013 National Scout Jamboree Patches

The Transatlantic Council contingent for the 2013 National Scout Jamboree is pleased to showcase our patches.

These patches are the primary fundraiser for the Contingent.  Our philosophy is that the 2013 National Scout Jamboree is something for all scouts and scout leaders to share.  We have therefore strived to make a patch set which is enjoyable for everyone and is at an affordable price (whilst still being a fundraiser).  These patches make great keepsakes or presents for scouts and scout leaders.  Go on and purchase some now: safe in the knowledge that you are helping our scouts to have a truly "mountain-top" scouting experience when they go to the Summit.

Shoulder Patch Set - $30 for the set of 4 JSPs and Center Patch

Our patch set for the 2013 National Scout Jamboree draws its inspiration in part of the theme of this Jamboree: Go Big, Get Wild.  The set comprises a four Jamboree shoulder patches (or JSPs) which rest on flattened spaces around a center patch.  The center patch shows scouts being active, swimming, biking, skiing and hiking.  The center patch is ringed the flags of the 24 countries which have active Transatlantic Council units.  We are always mindful of our origins though and we celebrate the first scout camp led by Lord Robert Baden-Powell on Brownsea Island in 1907 with the image of the Brownsea Island stone, the permanent monument on the site of that first camp.

The four JSPs showcase some of the highlights of our council.  Starting in the top left and proceeding clockwise the JSPs are as follows.

JSP #1 - Germany

A Scout is shown hiking up to a ridge overlooking Neuschwanstein Castle.  The castle is a 19th-century palace built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria.  It is located in southern Germany.  Germany also has the highest number of active members of Transatlantic Council of any country in which we operate.  Southern Germany is particularly beautiful for camping and hiking with large forests of broad leaved trees and pines.  A sprig of pine appears on the patch to remind us of the strong environmental stewardship exhibited throughout Germany.  Barvaria is also home to Camp Bayern, one of Transatlantic Council's three Boy Scout Summer Camps.

JSP #2 - Normandy

Normandy is a very special site for the world.  It is the site of the D-Day invasion landings during World War II and saw horrible bloodshed.  It also saw outstanding moments of courage, duty and honor: values treasured by Boy Scouts.  Since 1994, Transatlantic Council has held six council-wide camporee at the Normandy beaches.  The next Normandy Camporee will be in April 2014.  In honor of the service projects conducted during these camporees, and at other times, Transatlantic Council was officially named as one of the stewards of Omaha beach.  The cornflower, which appears on the left side of the patch, is a local sign of remembrance and of environmental stewardship.

JSP #3 - United Kingdom

London has the largest number of American ex-patriots of any single city in the world.  The inner keep of the Tower of London looms large in the background whilst a horseguard, a member of an elite royal regiment, stands watch.  Transatlantic Council holds one of its three Boy Scout Summer Camps in Sherwood Forest and this camp, Baden Powell High Adventure Camp, is represented on this JSP by the sprig of English Oak.

JSP #4 - Italy

Italy is home to the Transatlantic Council office.  It is not far from Pisa, and thus the Leaning Tower of Pisa presides over this JSP.  In the background, Mount Vesuvius begans to rumble into life.  In 79 AD, the volcano erupted and buried the Roman town of Pompeii in ash which froze it for centuries at that moment in time.  We hope that all scouts will take a moment to freeze the Jamboree in their minds and treasure those memories forever.  Mediterranean oil olive is known for contributing to a long and healthy life and so we have included a small branch of olives on this JSP to remind us to be fit and active for this action packed Jamboree.

Black Eagle Lodge Flap - $6

The lodge flap for the 2013 National Scout Jamboree uses one of the oldest monuments in Europe as it's backdrop, Stonehenge.  The purpose of the monument, how it was constructed and even when it was made are all subjects of debate.  In this way, Stonehenge echoes many of the mysteries of the Order of the Arrow.  The lodge totem, the Black Eagle, features prominently in the center of the flap.  It is ringed in bright yellow which, together with the golden sunset backdrop, conjures comparisons to the legend of the phoenix.  In this way we acknowledge that the change from Fort AP Hill to the Summit for this National Scout Jamboree is a re-birth of the Jamboree experience.

A word about the artist...

The artwork for these patches was done by Max Gorham.  Max is a retired advertising artist living in Sussex, United Kingdom.  He was never a scout himself, but his children were involved with the British Scouting program many years ago.  He is a good friend of Transatlantic Council and has helped on many projects including the artwork for the 2010 National Scout Jamboree patch set, the 2011 Normandy Council Camporee patches and many Mayflower District events.
