Where is NYLT Being Held?
NYLT will be held at Gilwell Park, England. Besides being the home of Scouting in the UK, Gilwell Park is considered one of Scouting’s primary heritage sites. Purchased by William Maclaren in 1919, Gilwell was the site of the first Scout campsite in that same year and became a primary Scouting training location. Although he never lived there, Lord Baden-Powell did camp, teach, and lecture at Gilwell often.
Today, Gilwell is closely aligned with Baden-Powell and reflects the strong heritage of the Scouting tradition around the world. You can learn more about at the Scouting Heritage site.
What is NYLT?
NYLT is an exciting, action-packed program designed to provide all 13 to 20-year-old youth members of the Boy Scouts of America (Scouts and Venturers) with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home units and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others. It is the second step of a three-phase youth leadership-training continuum. The first phase, Introduction to Leadership Skills (ILS), begins in the home unit. The second phase (this course), NYLT, is conducted by the local council. The third phase, National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE), is generally conducted at Philmont.
NYLT is a six-day leadership course delivered in an outdoor setting with an emphasis on immediate application of learning in a fun environment. It is NOT an outdoor skills course and NOT summer camp, so no merit badges will be issued.
The schedule parallels the program month of a typical Scouting unit. This might be a month in the life of a troop or a series of meetings leading to an activity in a Venturing crew. Participants will sleep in tents and prepare their own meals by teams (formerly known as patrols). Every NYLT course operates according to the Scouting ideals of Boy Scouting and Venturing. Participants are expected to live by the Scout Oath and Law.
NYLT is run by youth leaders under adult supervision. The Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) runs course meetings and events, chairs meetings of the patrol leaders’ conference, delegates duties to other youth staff, assists the Scoutmaster, models the learning and leadership skills, and recruit’s participants. Assistant Senior Patrol Leader’s (ASPLs) assist the SPL, oversee audiovisual support, guide the service team, inspect campsites, and prepare a model campsite. Troop Guides coach each day’s patrol leaders and present selected sessions and activities. Adults perform administrative services and ensure guidelines are met including health and safety. The entire focus is on modeling what a youth-led unit looks like in every aspect. This better enables participants, and youth staff, to be stronger leaders in their home units.
Participants will finish the course with a toolbox of effective leadership skills they can make their own and use throughout their life. Key course concepts include:

Applications MUST be forward to NYLT staff by a participant’s Scoutmaster or Senior Advisor and contain that leader’s recommendation. Applications received directly from a registrant will not be accepted and will be returned. Please download the appropriate application form:
Once the application has been submitted by the Scoutmaster or Senior Advisor (or Committee Chair or other senior Adult Scouter in the unit), the NYLT Course Director, Assistant Course Director and/or Course Commissioner will review the application. An email of course acceptance, or request for additional information, will be sent within 7 days notifying the Scout/Venturer and Scoutmaster/Senior Advisor. Be certain to provide functioning email addresses for both the applicant and the Scoutmaster/Senior Advisor!
The BSA Health and Medical Record must be valid through 12 August 2018, which means that it must have been verified and signed by a doctor after 13 August 2017. We must be aware of medical conditions requiring medication or other physical or mental disabilities. It is the parent/guardian responsibility for disclosing this information to the Course Director. Failure to do so may result in disenrollment from the course or an early return at your expense.
